Many of you know me and hear from me often. And you wonder how you too can have successful book sales or business profits.
The way I approach asking for sales is to first give, give, give great, unique information to educate my audience of business people who want to write a book and also market their businesses. I give through my free ebooks and free reports at my site. I give through all the how to comments in the groups I belong on Linkedin several times a week. I give through my blog, which I update 2X a week.
In other words, I’m using education to market my books and my coaching. It’s subtle, but when people sign up for these free things, I know they like and want my information, so then I do a third thing–I stay in touch with only my targeted audience by email. I keep giving new content and promote to them–usually one item per email. This is the database list (the list is the gold) that comes from the opt-in signs up at my site and blog. These emails are the one place I ask for the sale in addition to links at the end of my free reports or blog articles.

Do you remember Romeo in Shakespeare’s play? He had the wrong name–not one that Juliet’s family approved of, and it led to his downfall. At the end of the play, he committed suicide. He couldn’t help his name, but you can.
Your LI profile is the first thing you do when you join Linkedin, but just putting up any profile isn’t enough. It’s important to make your profile relevant and compelling. It may need some editing. (Think up to 4 edits on a profile in a year). You can check your profile numbers who visit you on the right side of your page. Maybe it reads, “15 people visited your profile this week.”
1. You don’t make enough requests for people to join your network. Any time you use social media marketing you need to be consistent in your participation.
2. You don’t get many questions in your LI inbox each week. Answering these allow others to like you, respect your information, and eventually trust you.

The one missing link I had in my social networking was a blog at my website.
The business blog works well with your Linkedin groups too.
I submit news articles to the 30 plus groups at Linkedin I belong to (all in my target audience) with a link to my blog to help businesses with their book or business marketing.
RESULTS WERE AMAZING! In one month, my targeted website audience increased 25% and is growing! That’s because they specifically wanted my information. My client numbers have doubled too, especially those needing to optimize their social media. They also need to make sure their Web site works together with social media (This may mean a Website update).

This March 2010 interview, with a great business and personal coach, Joanne Victoria, made me think my web visitors may also want to check me out personally as well as with business.
Because, we all have many sides to us that make us tick.
What do you agree with or disagree with below? Please comment at the end.
I’m always first, or how could I create success for my business of full-service book coaching, if I didn’t take very good care of me! I also put my clients first, because I can’t do it any other way.
Each year I take about 4 mini vacations to different hot springs in California, go camping with friends to swim, play bridge, and car tips to interesting local wineries or other beautiful nature spots, and one big one to a Caribbean Island for 2-4 weeks, depending. I don’t take a lap top; I delegate all the work to my VA and web master when I’m gone, so I can really relax; I snorkel and read good books and play with my long-time partner, Bill, on the beach.

Most of you know I’m active in about 30 groups in Linkedin. These are my best audiences–the ones who care about the topics I write books about and coach about.
I started over a year ago, so know this takes time. One the one hand, it’s connecting with others and on the other; it’s showing them you know your stuff.
To raise my visibility on Linkedin I join discussions when I can add value and belong to 30 plus groups who are mostly my audience–all to build my network for fun and profits. I focus on educating with useful content. My site reflects that too.
For the best visibility and credibility, we should educate our market with content. It’s the # 1 business trend this year. In the last 6 months here’s….
1. I updated and optimized my site with new special reports and now a business blog. You must have a content driven site and good sales copy to entice your visitor to stay a while. When these people opt-in for a report and other offerings, those emails I collect are part of my data base.

Do you want a big piece of the profit pie or, will you settle for just a few crumbs?
This phrase inspired me to tip you off on new article marketing changes you must make to get more targeted, not just any old traffic, to your site.
1. Know that the duplicate content rule effects your Google ranking. For each site you submit to, you must change your article 50% or more. Go to Dupecop.com and check this out.
2. Submit your article to EzineArticles.com or HubPages.com rather to low traffic directories. Just ask, “Who gets zillions more traffic?” EA does. Over 15,000 people click on to an article every hour. That’s terrific! Why diminish yourself and get crumbs?

Maybe you are thinking about getting help with your book project. Maybe you wonder if it’s worth it. Whatever form that coaching takes, it is worth it. A book coach can help you save time, frustration, and money down the drain because you will stop book writing, publishing, and promotion mistakes before they start.
One. Emerging authors don’t know their book’s purpose. Answer the question why are you are writing it? For fame, fortune? To answer a challenge? To brand your business and make money? To entertain?
Two. Emerging authors don’t know who is their preferred audience (it’s not everyone, what their preferred audience wants (as in solutions for a challenge), or where to reach them so the promotion and marketing dollars spend will bring a high Return on Investment (ROI). This is the most common and costly mistake, because a general audience is much harder to write for (you must include each audience in each chapter), and harder to market and promote. Your audience is all important in social media too.

The stigma of self-publishing not being acceptable as a viable way to publish is long over. That’s just old propaganda.
And, you should know that the odds of you being accepted by a big publisher are 1%. And if you do get “chosen” you will still have to do the promotion. They may give you an intern who will schedule some book signings in North Dakota or Maine, but not where they will do you some good. Those book tours are grueling and a lot of work for the authors with little payoffs. My advice is not to go with a publisher unless they can make you at least 10X as much money as you can on your own. They don’t pay attention to you. You should pay attention to you!
You may know that ebook sales for 2010 will be near $3.5 billion. Traditional publishing is down 3%. So what’s the right choice? And remember, Kindle books sell at around $10. And, the younger audience is also expanding to mature adults.
1. Get real. Write your best short book with high value the first time.
Contact a book coach to help you write your chapters so they are quality, and engage your reader by solving his/her challenges.
You may know a lot, but can you share it without lecturing or telling?

===Q. DO I NEED MY OWN BOOK SELLING WEB SITE?
One new client asked this question. Her Amazon sales so low, as were her own site’s sales, that she realized she needed to create a new URL for her Romance Book website, using the title as part of the name of the site.
Also, her new site would have the advantage of collecting her unique visitors’ emails (opt-ins) so she can stay in touch and promote on a regular schedule such as 1X each two weeks.

Did you know that Tweets at Twitter can help you get much more visibility for your book, and even credibility as a “go to” person in your field? Even with a small list of your target audience followers, you can get your message out there, and parlay the promotion viral success to Facebook and Linkedin in just a wink of time and little money.
Your potential targeted readers are online and so are experts in your book’s genre or non-fiction field. Be sure to follow these two groups on twitter. Then create a profile on LI and join related groups to your book or business. Maybe you’ll join my business book group there. Then, comment on different discussions. I’ve joined over 35 groups, but you don’t have to do that. When you comment on just a few discussions, your audience will flock to you if you have good information to share. The same is true in Facebook. While my book group was good, even better was my new fan page. We promote it heavily a lot of places (think Twitter) and always give the benefits of joining it. Then, the rest is history!
The biggest complaint I hear as a social media coach for book authors, is that they just don’t do it because they don’t know how to do it well. Another complaint is that it takes too much time.
